Art is Life: Guggenheim Introduces Virtual Art Classes

Art is Life: Guggenheim Introduces Virtual Art Classes
23 novembre 2020

An online art history course, consisting of two cycles of four classes each, will be available to members of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, running on a weekly basis over the next few months. Led by Alessandra Montalbetti, art historian at Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan, these hour-long evening lectures, taught in Italian, will be streamed via Zoom, accessible to all those who enrol.

“Art cannot be separated from life. It is the expression of the greatest need of which life is capable.”

Robert Henri

Often overlooked, the inspiring and unlimited freedom that artistic expression provides naturally lends itself to many aspects of reality seemingly unrelated to art. In a series of eight lectures, Montalbetti delves into a profound discussion which addresses the extraordinary relationship between art and life. Spanning across both cultures and centuries, each class will explore art alongside a different theme which, while not immediately discernible, is deeply connected to the history of art.

The first cycle, starting on November 23, 2020 at 7 p.m., will examine the true meaning of alchemical knowledge, drawing upon examples of 18th century architecture, namely the outstanding villas located in the Sicilian town of Bagheria. Following on, there will be a consideration upon the dialogue between art and advertising, looking at some the world’s most celebrated brands, such as Campari, Nokia and Huawei.

Moving into December, both music and cuisine are placed under an artistic lens, discussed alongside famous artists, ranging from Caravaggio and Leonardo Da Vinci, to Pablo Picasso, René Magritte and Andy Warhol.

This program is an enriching, exclusive opportunity to learn more about the way in which art influences our everyday, and vice-versa. While it’s not possible to visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection right now, this innovative venture strives to bring art to you.
